Springtime with My Backyard Cardinals in Austin, TX

About a week ago, I came across a cardinal nest with 4 brand new hatchlings in one of my rose bushes. Their mama and papa are always close so I thought I would start a little photo diary while they raise their new additions. I didn't take too many shots of the babies because I don't want to stress out the parents and disturb nature so most of these shots are with my telephoto lens from a distance and mainly of the parents for now.

Sadly, nature can be really cruel and since I had started this series a week ago, only one hatchling remains. My guess is that either a bluejay or squirrel has found their nest. Even with the disappearances, the mama has been very calm around me and Bella (my pug). I've even included some shots of Bella helping me look for the missing babies. The mama must think we are are keeping away other predators while we're around. She hops up to us with curiosity and sings so this is why I have more shots of her than the more skittish papa. I really want to get them a bird house to protect the remaining fledgling but I've read that cardinals would not use them so I'm crossing my fingers that the last one will survive. I'll try to keep this blog updated as time goes by.

The following images were shot with the following: Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 50mm f/1.4 and Canon 72-200mm f/2.4.

Winter Family Portrait Shoots in Texas

If you have ever lived in central Texas, you know that it very rarely snows before the holiday season. However, this does not mean that you cannot capture the essence of family joy. I had the pleasure to photograph this wonderful family at the Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park in Austin, TX a couple of years ago. I had no idea this park even existed before then but I have to say it has become my favorite portraiture location as of yet. If you ever have the opportunity, try going there an hour before sunset and you'll be able to capture the colors as I did. There is a brisk vibrancy that one cannot describe until you see it for yourself.

Austin Photo Safari 2016

Beauty can be found in everything. To prove this point, my friend Bob and I decided to drive around Austin, TX, one Saturday afternoon and shoot random things things and locations that we came across. My goal on this photo safari was to find urban beauty in things that you wouldn't normally expect to see. Even though these are not beautiful in a classical sense, there is a certain appeal that I have found through composition, contrast, and colors.

The following are some of my favorites.

Austin Business Journal: Jesse James and the Austin Speed Shop

Austin Business Journal

Austin Business Journal

I am so excited to announce that I have recently had the opportunity to photograph an editorial spread for the

Austin Business Journal

featuring Jesse James (West Coast Choppers) and his partners; John Joyoprayitno, Dan Peterson, and Cory Moore. The story is based on their business partnership and success of Austin’s own Austin Speed Shop.

Once the magazine publishes the images, I’ll add the tear sheets to this blog but for now here’s a tiny sneak peak from that day…

VIDEO WORK

Lately, I have been entertaining the idea of making music videos. This was inspired by a video I had to make during my application process to the University of Texas-Austin’s art school. During the time I had made the following video, I was starting to become annoyed on how today’s pop culture has taken a turn for the worst. Yes, even during my time as a teen we looked up to pop stars like Madonna and Brittany Spears, for example, but I can not remember a time when we looked up to people as role models for becoming famous for nothing. The sadder part is that it seems today’s youth seem to be consumed by wanting to be like the women who have become famous for “accidentally” flashing their privates or being in a sex video while speaking like uneducated idiots with their baby-talk. Sadly, these are the women who are now dominating reality television, magazines, and merchandise and dictating through example how a girl should dress, speak, and act. It’s true that they are smart enough to cash in on their “brand” but what true morals are they teaching the children of this country?

This is why I felt inspired to make my artistic statement regarding the above and incorporate my own life experiences through this video. Please be aware that there are some graphic images so be aware of who is around before watching this video.

Digital Imaging - Before and Afters

When I am contracted for projects, not only do I offer photography with my services but I also include digital imaging as part of my contracts as well. I have been working with Photoshop since the beginning of my photography career (2004). Since then, I have also taken several visual communication courses at Austin Community College in order to polish my craft as a digital imaging artist. So I thought it would be a good idea to post some images on here to showcase the different styles and techniques that I can perform via Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5. These are just a few of what I have in my portfolio. Through out time, I will post more.
